NOMOS Glashütte

In case you missed our recent primer, NOMOS Glashütte is a proudly German (not Swiss) brand and the country's first independent watchmaking company established following the reunification of East and West Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. NOMOS keeps "Made in Germany" at its heart and now honors this label with a watch inspired by one of the most globally recognized symbols of German excellence, the Autobahn.

Created in collaboration with renowned designer Werner Aisslinger, Autobahn neomatik 41 date is an elegant reflection of German engineering, just like its namesake. Aisslinger and his creative partner Tina Bunyaprasit developed a series of design elements to create a sense of speed and motion — distinct forms, steep curves, novel displays, and graceful surfaces.

It’s dashing, sporty, a powerful machine—without being brash or loud. Autobahn reminds me of a vintage sports car. There are definitely more contemporary modes of transport, but old automobiles, their form, and finishing fascinate me. And I love speed!

The classic timepiece features a number of distinct elements, each a testament to the Bauhaus principles that inform NOMOS designs. With a robust case and dial, Autobahn is water-resistant to 100 meters. The strikingly curved dial and sapphire crystal glass perfectly frame the Super-LumiNova luminous ring and three-lane date window. The textile strap is tailor-made in France while created by the company's in-house design studio in Berlin.

The most striking aspect is perhaps the depth of the dial. Its edge is curved, like the outside lane of a racetrack—or the fender of a vintage race car.
