A big bag is one of those tricky purchases, how big do we go? You may have thought the bigger the better, but just take a look at lululemon’s Big Ass Bag and come back to me. I’ll wait.

I had been after a new work bag, something that could comfortably house my laptop and whatever other bits I’d accumulated that day. As someone who’s long relied on cotton totes, and cheap ones at that, I knew I was looking for a step-up. Something inoffensive on the eye and, more importantly, durable enough to stand the test of time. All of which led me to Dr. Martens of all places.

Yes, you read that right. And yes, they do more than heavy-duty boots. I’d never really thought of Dr. Martens when it came to bags, but then again, I’d never really had much reason to. The Maxi Overdrive Leather Tote changed that pretty quickly. It’s a big, proper work carry-all, which is exactly what I was after, but it doesn’t feel like I’ve suddenly started horsing a check-in bag to the office.

Plus, the fact it's entirely waxed leather is a big appeal. Their shoes are built to last, and it seems the accessories have been given the same brief.

By now, we’ve all likely seen the internet’s fixation on COS’ sold-out Trullo Flap Bag, AKA the much cheaper (unless you’re looking on Vinted, that is) Balenciaga Rodeo. I’ll admit, I did in fact run to their website when the algorithm reached me, but to my demise, it was already long gone. Now, from a place of acceptance, I can see that the Trullo may have been a tad bit too polished as a work bag for my liking anyway.

What I love about this Dr. Martens one is that it already looks aged. The waxed leather encourages any and all marks and scratches, which, for me, is exactly what I want from a work tote. I don’t want to be worrying about every little scuff. If anything, I’m looking forward to seeing what it looks like once I’ve properly put it through its paces.

Is it flashy and viral? Nope. Is it going to have everyone asking where it’s from? Probably not. But then again, maybe that’s exactly why I like it.
