Patrick Stewart is returning to Star Trek to reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard in a new CBS All Access series.

The BBC reports that after months of speculation surrounding his return, Stewart confirmed the news during a surprise appearance at Las Vegas' annual Star Trek convention.

Stewart played the Starfleet Officer in the series between 1987 and 1994, and also featured in two Star Trek films in 1998 and 2002. “It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions with him,” Stewart said in a statement.
