adidas' Wafer-Thin Gazelle Is Fresh From the Biscuit Tin
Some sneakers demand a whole outfit. This adidas Gazelle Lo Pro asks for a cup of tea. In Khaki Three, the flattened classic has the pleasing palette of a biscuit: sandy suede, off-white stripes, and a darker gum sole running around the bottom like a lightly toasted edge.
It's a small snack of a sneaker, right down to the proportions. The Lo Pro takes the Gazelle's familiar shape and lowers the outsole, with stitching at the front tracing its recognizable T-toe.
This version adds a woven leather tongue, an especially nice detail on a shoe that could otherwise pass for a very straightforward beige trainer. The tongue gives the upper something to chew on. Its pattern peeks out between the laces while the suede supplies a softer, quieter finish everywhere else.
The Three Stripes still do their usual work, but the details feel more interesting the closer you get. Then there's the height, or lack of it.
A thin sole lets wide trousers fall cleanly over the shoe and makes the familiar Gazelle feel almost like a lace-up slipper. Visually, at least. The sporting outline remains easy to recognize. The Khaki Three/Off White/Gum adidas Gazelle Lo Pro is available for $120 on adidas' US website in women's sizing.
Very little sole. Plenty of biscuit.
