HOKA, the Los Angeles-based French running brand, has burst onto the mainstream scene for various reasons. Firstly, the brand positioned itself well, with tasteful collaborations with the likes of Opening Ceremony and Engineered Garments. Secondly, the brand’s unmistakable chunky aesthetic was perfectly on-trend and offered consumers a comfortable and athletic alternative to chunky, high-end brands’ sneakers.

Among runners, HOKA sneakers are some of the best to pound the asphalt with, as silhouettes such as the Bondi 6 and Carbon X are routinely worn by some of the world’s top runners at some of the most prestigious races. But also among sneakerheads, HOKA sneakers are quickly becoming cult favorites. Retailers with huge street cred — such as Kith — are stocking some more fashion-conscious designs and colorways.

When figuring out what the best HOKA sneakers are, you’ve got to consider why you’re buying them. If you’re buying them as a runner and purely for performance reasons, you can’t go wrong with either the Bondi 6, Clifton 6, or the Carbon X. If you’re going to be wearing them for style or comfort during the summer months, you’re probably better off looking at styles such as the Tor Ultra, Elevon 2.

To avoid you getting overwhelmed by Google, we’ve highlighted some of our favorite HOKA sneakers that were released over the past few seasons below.

HOKA Bondi L

Bondi L

Brand: HOKA

Model: Bondi L

Key Features: The neutral light brown colorway turns this sneaker and its exaggerated midsole into a muted, versatile design.

Buy:  Highsnobiety Shop

Editor’s Notes:  The Bondi L, the lifestyle variation of HOKA’s original max-cushioned road shoe. Here, streetwear design merges with bold innovation through an eye-catching sneaker designed for all-day wear. A favorite of ours thanks to the label's collaboration with Engineered Garments that re-imagined the sneaker with a calf-hair upper, this latest release comes in a more minimal "Oxfod Tan/Dune" colorway.

HOKA Clifton 8

Clifton 8

Brand: Hoka

Model: Clifton 8

Key Features: A compression molded EVA midsole and molded EVA sockliner enhance cushioning and provide peak comfort.

Buy:  Highsnobiety Shop

Editor’s Notes:  The newest edition of HOKA's Clifton sneaker, the 8 arrived on shop shelves in June 2021 and remaines its best performing Clifton. This version provides an even softer ride than its predecessor thanks to a new midsole compound that equates to one of the brand’s lightest and most energetic foams ever.

HOKA Mafate Speed 2

Mafate Speed 2

Brand: HOKA

Model: Madate Speed 2

Key Features: A Vibram Mega-Grip sole means that this shoe can take on virtually any terrain.

Buy:  Highsnobiety Shop

Editor’s Notes: Utilising its expertise in running shoes, HOKA has launched its latest trail-running shoe equipped with 5 mm Vibram Mega-Grip tread, no-sew SpeedFrame construction, and a lightweight cushioned CMEVA top midsole.

While the technical specs of this sneaker are impressive, the embracing of trail-running shoes amongst the fashion circles made us look at these in a completely different light. Its chunky shape and colorway inspired by the mountainous terrain of the French Alps makes this one of the best-looking trail running sneakers on the market.

HOKA Bondi X

Bondi X

Buy at Highsnobiety

Brand: HOKA

Model: Bondi X

Key Features: a propulsive carbon fiber plate added to the midsole offers a smooth transition through the gait cycle, making for a more versatile ride.

Buy:  Highsnobiety Shop

Editor’s Notes: A distinguishing feature across HOKA's footwear range is its chunky midsoles and the Bondi X is the perfect example of this. Using the labels early stage Meta-Rocker technology, the shoe is known for its comfort when running or just using the shoe for casual use. Adding a carbon fiber plate in the midsole makes the Bondi X's cushioning slightly stiffer but better suited for fast running.

HOKA ONE ONE Bondi 6 Low

Model: Bondi 6 Low

Key Features: A breathable, blue knit upper makes up the majority of the sneaker’s upper. A padded collar and heel provide extra comfort, while the brand’s signature performance sole features split color blocking, with half of it rendered in white and the other half in a black/blue gradient.

Buy: Farfetch

Editor’s Notes: Performance footwear brand HOKA ONE ONE has become a favorite among the more fashion-conscious crowd thanks to its on-trend design and eye-catching color blocking, the Bondi 6 Low in blue, yellow, and black was no different. Originally designed for long distance running, the sneaker saw its sleek upper paired with a bulkier sole unit. Cushioned insoles, compression midsoles, and a padded collar make the HOKA ONE ONE Bondi 6 Low the perfect all-day, every day sneaker.

Model: Torrent

Key Features: The collaborative Torrent comes in two colorways, green and red, both available in men’s and women’s sizes. The mesh upper is super breathable and dries quickly, while the sole is outfitted with multidirectional studs to hold you down on tough terrain —whether that’s just a snowy street or a bonafide trail. Like most of HOKA’s sneaker offerings, the Torrent also combines a sleek, performance-focused upper with a maximalist Vibram midsole, creating an aesthetically-pleasing juxtaposition.

Editor’s Notes: Together, HOKA ONE ONE and XTERRA took on the Torrent and wrapped it in camo to make a highly functional and surprisingly fashionable trail runner.

Editor’s Notes: Engineered Garments collaborated again with the ever-popular performance footwear brand HOKA ONE ONE, this time it took on the latter’s Bondi B running sneaker. To showcase the joint foray, Engineered Garments tapped East Harlem-born-and-raised artist Shaun Crawford to illustrate the collaborative shoes in a coinciding editorial.

The Bondi B was HOKA ONE ONE’s first lightweight, ultra-cushioned road runner. Primed and ready for any distance, the sneaker offers the wearer unmatched cushioning and a more supportive feel.

HOKA ONE ONE Tor Ultra Hi 2 WP "Burnt Olive"

Key Features: This iteration sees new utilitarian colorways added to its mountain-ready TOR ULTRA HI 2 WP. The full-grain leather and textile upper is done up in a militaristic burnt olive colorway as well as a muted pearly gray.

Editor’s Notes: Running shoe expert HOKA ONE ONE followed up its popular black Tor Ultra Hi 2 WP with two additional colorways, olive and taupe. As with the original black iteration, the newer offering retained the same characteristic running shoe cushioning, as well as its waterproof membrane, forefoot flex grooves, full-length EVA midsole, and Vibram MegaGrip hi-traction outsole. It paired that with a high-top construction, making it the ultimate hiking or trail shoe for those that want a distinct sportswear feel to their outdoors footwear.

With its marshmallow-like cushioning, Outdoor Voices insists the lightweight Clifton 4 will keep your feet happy mile after mile. The sneaker was designed to mold to your foot to offer a more comfortable ride, while engineered mesh and a 3D puff print frame provide a better fit and improved breathability.

The midsole and outsole both feature more rubber coverage for increased durability compared with older versions of the model. A supportive heel counter provides lateral and medial security.

Buy: Alpin Store

Editor’s Notes: HOKA ONE ONE followed up its well-received Engineered Garments collaboration, releasing the improved Challenger ATR 5. The versatile sneaker offers runners a safe and smooth ride across various types of surfaces.

HOKA ONE ONE’s sneakers are known for their chunky midsoles. While that design element serves a practical purpose, it also keeps the brand’s runners in line with the current bulky footwear trend, making HOKA ONE ONE models a great alternative for fashion-conscious runners.

The sneaker dropped in two colorways. The black/green version arrived in men’s sizing, while the blue, teal, and yellow iteration dropped for women.

The Tor Ultra Hi’s EVA and RMAT midsole, paired with a Vibram MegaGrip outsole offer unmatched cushioning and traction for those mountain adventures. And while the sneaker is predominantly constructed from full-grain leather and durable textile materials, it is also covered in a waterproof membrane to ensure your feet remain warm and dry.

Buy: StockX

Editor’s Notes: The three iterations of the Tor Ultra Low WP JP featured a Viblam® mega grip outsole which was superimposed under the midsole blending EVA and RMAT®. For hikers in particular, this means excellent traction and superior cushioning.

The low-cut waterproof kicks were offered in outdoorsy black, burnt olive, and dark denim colorways. This addition to the TOR ULTRA series combined the cushioning of its running shoes and the upper of its trekking options.

HOKA ONE ONE Gaviota 2

Model: Gaviota 2

Key Features: The Gaviota 2 comes in an open engineered mesh construction, arch-lock wings for midfoot stability and support, molded OrthoLite sockliner for a precise fit, rubberized foam J-Frame for rebound and durability and zonal rubber placement.

Buy: Farfetch

Editor’s Notes: Sports-minded shoe company HOKA ONE ONE offered athletes another premium road running shoe option with the Gaviota 2.

The successor to 2017’s Gaviota, the Gaviota 2 stood out due to its superior cushioning and the HOKA ONE ONE J-Frame design, which provides the wearer with enhanced support, rebound and durability. The J-Frame also offers a more consistent fit and wear in general.

Instead of the two-tone versions seen in FW18, the brands opted for tonal colorways: violet and white. The only hit of contrasting color on either pair came in the form of the rainbow lace option that arrived with the white pair.

Model: Carbon X

Key Features: The model comes with HOKA’s signature active foot frame construction for stability and support, and a carbon fiber plate in the midsole in addition to an aggressive Metarocker that provides an efficient ride.
