Perhaps no other time then now have we ever had such an abundance of hoodies. They’ve become part of the foundation brands build on as new collections are churned out year after year.
We’ve glared from the sidelines as Rocky effortlessly pairs them with flannels, and watched the rise and fall of Ye’s collaboration with GAP which rose to new heights after the first hoodies dropped.
But, for one reason or another all hoodies are not equal.
Compared to its pullover counterpart, the zip up hoodie is often overlooked and doesn’t get enough credit in the sweater landscape. It could be that some folks just despise having zippers on their garments, or brands just tend to lean towards pullover hoodies since it’s a bit easier to add graphics or embroidery to them.
What’s often left out of hoodie debate is the overall practicality of having a zipper. Too often I’ve been too warm in a pullover hoodie and a zipper would’ve easily changed everything. It allows a different level of comfort that you can dial in as you please depending on the environment.
And while I don’t expect to see any drastic changes from my favorite brands anytime soon, I for one think that time is slowly coming to an end, and zip up hoodies will retake its place on the throne of sweater royalty.
Until then, we can appreciate a few options from some brands that get it and put pullover hoodies to shame.
