Diesel’s It-Bag Bid Is D-One and Done

  • Story byJohn Kopp

Ever since “it-status” entered fashion’s sphere and spread with an almost airborne virality, it seems “it” is all we can think of: it-girls, it-shoes, it-bags. But what exactly is “it”? For as long as that fine specimen of a prefix has emerged, we’ve been trying to figure out precisely just that: good genes or good taste, or so goes the discourse. To make matters murkier, sometimes a rare strain of “it” comes along whose DNA is so complex that traces of both can stump even the savviest experts—case in point, that of Diesel. With metamorphic design DNA that mutates restlessly and a knack for applying that DNA to crafting knockout grails, Diesel turned denim into quite the modern-day marvel. Little wonder, with designs that splice S-E-X appeal into the ever-practical cotton-twill textile, that anything bestowed with that tell-all emblem summons a heady lust upon first sight.

The latest evolution of that DNA, however, is not localized to its jeans. Rather, it spreads up from the leg and onto the crook of the arm, where the house’s latest bag transforms with the versatility of denim—and all the dazzling Diesel treatment. Its appeal? Highly contagious. The risk factor? Dangerous—if not wielded with caution. This is a mighty bag to contend with, and you’ll need to understand its anatomy before taking it on as your own. Lucky you: with a little insider knowledge, your style, too, can evolve like Diesel’s when bag meets arm and the neurons fire. Enter the D-One.

Diesel, Diesel

The D-One takes form at that very nexus of artistry and utility that the Italian fashion house amassed its fame for. Diesel, prone to stunning the style-savvy with hedonistic displays of hair-raising craftsmanship, fashions the bag of the moment with a silhouette so relaxed, it forgoes structure altogether. Observe the slouch. Through a specialized tanning process from which it gets its supple flexibility, the D-One is not a bag for posturing; rather, it sags ever defiantly, challenging the notion that an it-bag need be confined to any definitive shape—and all for good measure.

Coded with a sort of sub-anagram for those truly in the know, the D-One is designed as a one-and-done, an it-bag that’s just as chic as it is effortless. Contrary to the magnified hardware and logomania of other it-bags, whose rigid glamour secures their space in a duster or on a shelf, patiently awaiting the occasional glint in the spotlight—the D-One is not a bag down for dainty gestures. No, this right here is a bag that’s built for the wear and tear of the downtown-bound bon vivant, who doesn’t give a second thought to the entanglements their bag may get caught in—only those of their own.

Diesel, Diesel

Whether in small, medium, large, or duffel size, it’s a bag meant to endure, progressing its allure with each wear. Be it lustrous calfskin, sturdy cowhide, distressed canvas, denim, or patchwork leather, the D-One is a testament to the house’s design acumen. Study its canvas. Ripped with rugged abrasions and, what the house calls, “dirtied” with a worn-in effect, this canvas is decadently distressed—and that’s just the starting point. Tug it, snag it, do with it as you please! With Diesel’s D-One, style is a matter of breaking in glamour and defining its shape on your own.

And yet, Diesel, being Diesel, couldn’t resist breaking a few more conventions in modeling the new wave of it-bags. Among the D-One are nods to its heritage of workwear, specifically jeans via rivets, buckles, keepers, and metal prongs. Elsewhere, among its leather, the D-One puts its pores on display via barrel-dying, rather than smoothing them out, creating character through creases and texture.

Diesel, Diesel

A true it-bag is a shifty thing; it pledges no allegiance to the form it occupies, transforming season after season into the kind of accessory that evolves along with the style of those who sport it. Synthesizing polarities is no easy undertaking. But in Diesel’s laboratory, where workwear and the fantasy of playing dress-up entwine like the backbones of a DNA ladder, it’s as easy as the brisk tug of a strap across a shoulder.
