There's a fine line between distressed and destroyed, and one thing Maison Margiela does is tread that line carefully.

The label regularly covers its sneakers with paint, last season it released stained shoelaces as a $180 belt, and who could forget its chunky footwear with glue spilling from it? So, when the luxury house releases knitwear that appears to be slowly falling apart as part of its Co-Ed 2023 collection, it's just the Maison doing what it does.

Deconstructing classic argyle knitwear, the type you might have been forced to begrudgingly throw on for Christmas or a relative's birthday when you were younger, the new pieces feature a "Décortiqué design and loose threads," according to the product description on Margiela's website.

What this results in is that the thick threads that make up the argyle patterns on its sweater vests, cardigans, and crewnecks hang from the bottom of the designs and hold together cut-out holes in the body of knits.

Building on its founder's anti-fashion mentality and interest in the aging of clothes, these pieces from Maison Margiela (currently led by creative director John Galliano) are a long way from being traditional knitwear.

Just be warned, these knits will shine a light on whatever it is you are (or aren't) wearing beneath them.
