Can't Afford an S-Class? Ride Around in This adidas-Powered Mercedes Instead
As Formula 1 continues its rapid transformation into a global lifestyle brand, motorsport heritage has become one of the most lucrative frontiers in footwear. No brand makes more sense, though, than adidas. The Three Stripes teams up with its official F1 partner for the Mercedes-Benz x adidas Samba Collection.
With F1’s cultural boom, virtually every major fashion label and footwear brand wants a slice of motorsport’s aura. As the official technical and footwear partner of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, adidas holds the symbolic keys to the garage, though.
Rather than leaning into loud race-day sponsor graphics, the collection reimagines the Samba through the lens of luxury automotive interiors. Drawing inspiration from Mercedes S-Class upholstery, the Samba’s quilted uppers feel familiar and more versatile than if they had been engineered to mimic an F1 interior.
Offered in Magic Beige, Grey Five, and Core Black palettes, the uppers trade standard leather for diamond-quilted leather panels and refined tonal overlays, with structured, diamond-stitched leather forming the quarter panels and toe box, paying direct homage to luxury cabin seating.
The signature Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star is stamped onto the tongue badge, while tonal leather 3-Stripes nod to adidas. The upper is built on a low-profile rubber cupsole that matches the tonal execution of the upper for each shoe.
This is a really clever design from adidas. The temptation to lean heavily into the sporty, technical side of F1 design would have created a much less wearable shoe. As it stands, taking inspiration from the more luxe side of the Merc archive, the Mercedes-Benz x adidas Samba Collection is easy to style and lands more as a luxury signifier than a sporty merch drop.
