Double Tap to Zoom

There’s something oddly familiar about this Nike. Not because you’ve necessarily seen it before, but because it looks like the kind of sneaker you might find buried in the back of a vintage store and immediately wonder why nobody else has bought it.

The Air Max Metro has that old-school running shoe look down to a T.

The layered upper, slightly wonky proportions and mix of mesh and synthetic panels all feel like they’ve been pulled from a Nike catalog you haven’t thought about in 20 years.

This colorway helps, too. Black and dark gray keep things suitably aged-looking, while Bright Crimson pops up across the upper like a little reminder that this is, in fact, a Nike Air Max and not some obscure deadstock find.

It’s got a bit of that “my dad probably owned these” energy, except considerably more desirable. The shape is chunky without being cartoonishly so, and all those different panels give it the sort of visual clutter that makes older runners so much fun.

There’s also something refreshing about a sneaker that doesn’t look overly perfected. The Metro has quirks. It has bits that stick out. It looks like a real running shoe rather than a carefully sanitized version of one.

Basically, Nike has made the kind of sneaker that looks like it already has a story. We’re just happy to give it a few more.
