New Balance is arguably the sneaker company with the most popular archive of retro designs. While the brand has a very successful line of modern kicks, from performance runners to retro-style lifestyle sneakers, many of its bestsellers are classic silhouettes from decades ago. Add to that the fact that New Balance is literally famous for its simple grey colorway, so it’s no surprise that it’s the go-to label for normcore gems.

But, while much of the New Balance catalog takes the form of grey staples, there is the occasional drop that ventures off the beaten track. And, with spring finally here, it’s these bolder iterations that we’re on the hunt for.

A recent scroll through the latest sneakers to drop at New Balance revealed a serious highlight: a MADE in UK 991v1 in dusty pink, or — as New Balance describes it — Wistful Mauve.

There’s a certain character to this release that feels more like a collaboration or limited-edition colorway than a general release. Sure, it’s Made in the UK, which means that you can expect high-end materials and craftsmanship, but for all intents and purposes, it’s a general-release colorway. Towards the end of 2022, we obsessed over another GR colorway which felt like something more exclusive, too.

The 991 is an undebatable champion in the arena of everyday silhouettes. The chunky build offers extreme comfort and versatility, so it’s the perfect design to carry a bolder colorway like Wistful Mauve.
