Trip 'Fit Tips

While typing this in a nearly empty office, I'm realizing just how pressing an issue it is to finally address travelwear. We’re on the cusp of prime summer vacation season, when everyone you know is about to be OOO, soaking up waterfront sun rays, or climbing mountains somewhere several flights away. Having just completed a series of weekender Europe tours myself, I feel a personal duty to share the ingredients of my personal “travel capsule” that’s smart and light without having to sacrifice on the style front.

First, you’ll need the largest carry-on you can find. I’m a big proponent of the class of luggage that sometimes requires being held at a certain angle in order to slide by the gate control: Two of my favorite bags that fall into this gray zone are The North Face's small duffle (of which there's also a luxe leather version), and Porter-Yoshida & Co.'s slouchy nylon Tanker. Have they gotten by in 100% of cases? No. Does the occasional fee still boil down to a favorable savings-to-packing-room ratio every time? Yes!

As for its contents, you’ll of course want to prioritize pieces that can go day to night. Even if you’re going somewhere warm, bring at least a couple of  long-sleeve shirts; checkedstripedplainpoplinlinen — you can’t go wrong. You’ll love throwing them over a COS tank or tee, or over a bare chest, with the sleeves rolled up or down depending on the occasion. They’ll go easily over swim trunks in the afternoon as they will tucked into belted pants at night.

Many actually find the pants packing question the hardest to answer. After all, you don’t want to waste precious room on “specialty” items that can only be worn once. My latest solution? Bring a pair of lined Nike gym boxers that can moonlight as both a bathing suit and regular short shorts for when it's hot hot. I usually have some washed-out Levi's 501 jeans for daytime, and a deep indigo Blue Blue pair to slip into after dusk. Both are comfy, cottony, and adaptable to any category of activity — city strolls versus dinner and drinks, for instance. And either jeans are fine for the airport too since I’m assuming  you're too adult to wear sweats and pool slides on the road.

Which brings us to footwear! My rule is that letting the dogs out anywhere but at your intended  destination — the pool, the function — is a no-no, so keep the flip-flops and sandals in-bag while en-route. A dark sneaker is an easy and un-excruciating all-day shoe that traverses effortlessly between beach promenades and white tablecloths (extra points if it triples as an exercise shoe also) — as can a soft loafer, a slipper or deck stepper, if properly broken in. Throw on a featherweight jacket or cardigan sweater for good measure, and stop overthinking what'll soon feel like intelligent under-packing.

Open Tabs: Everything We've Got Our Eyes On Right Now

  • Do trust that this women's Uniqlo tee looks great on guys, and that these white jorts have a deceptively expensive air about them.

  • GU is the former's little sibling brand, and this bag looks like a sibling to its viral half moon crossbody from a few years ago.

  • In other bag news, Dior just keeps the book totes comin’, alongside lush new colorways of its derby sneakers.

  • Why, oh why must this wonderfully weathered A.PRESSE hoodie be the coziest and priciest of its kind?!

  • Our Legacy's infamous graphic printed "Work Shop" hoodie seems equally snuggly and'll cost but a fraction.

  • These Prada sunglasses are refreshingly simple. No big logos, no huge plastic frames — just the way I like it.*

  • Both these laceless slipper-sneakers and this sheer top by Paloma Wool are in my shopping cart.

  • But Miu Miu's textured long-sleeve is for those who'd rather be more covered-up.

  • The latest Adidas x Song For The Mute is a summer-ready retro runner.

  • In that same spirit, ASICS mule-ified one of its classics. Love!

  • This iteration of the ongoing On x Loewe partnership might be the best yet.

  • Not sure what the difference is between a regular model and Zara x Havaianas collab, but they sure are cute (and so is this raglan tee).
