Three Stripes, Infinite Hues? Adicolor Me Curious
While the Samba, Superstar or Stan Smith might be icons of the Three Stripes' sneaker history, when it comes to its apparel archive, it doesn't get more iconic than adidas adicolor.
Launched all the way back in 1983 as part of a footwear customization promo event, adidas' Adicolor is now one of the general athleisure category's most recognizable collections.
Once merely a white sneaker sold with a rainbow's worth of colored markers to doodle on one's shoes with, the sub-line now entails a full arsenal of casual and sporty clothes, complete with dresses, denim track suits, and accessories, amongst many other items.
So, something that could've easily remained but a seasonal campaign wound up becoming a brand-defining, long term legacy project on the beauty that is to express one's individuality.
Nonetheless, it took a carefully orchestrated return in 2006, with the "Color Series," to elevate the line's status to the heights it sits at today. It saw the German powerhouse collaborate with some of the world's hottest boutique stores, labels, and artists, including Colette, Jeremy Scott, and Wood Wood, which put Adicolor back on the map for good.
Year after year, adidas uses Adicolor to further expand on this notion of fun and freedom, adding new shades, new textiles, silhouettes and landmark partnerships to the family. And even with this constant commitment to newness, the clothes never lose that charming sense of retro flair that's adored across generations, places, and tastes.
