adidas' Japan has wandered into the dairy aisle. And come back looking very good. The latest version of the slim sneaker swaps restraint for a black-and-cream cow print, turning its compact upper into something closer to a cookies-and-cream milkshake. An unusually hairy one, admittedly.

There is quite a lot happening on very little shoe. Cream Three Stripes cut across the irregular black patches, a matching heel tab interrupts the pattern, and pale blue laces supply the surprise ingredient.

Small gold eyelets add another little flash. Underneath, a narrow black sole keeps the whole thing close to the floor. That low profile makes the print work. A bigger sneaker might turn this much cow into a costume.

The Japan has just enough surface area to make it a detail you notice beneath a pair of trousers, then keep looking at. It also gives the familiar black-and-white sneaker a welcome texture problem. In a good way. You get the easy wardrobe pairing of a monochrome shoe with the rather less sensible pleasure of a fuzzy spotted upper.

Listed in women's sizing, the cow-print adidas Japan is available on the brand's US website for $120. The official color name is Core Black/Cream White/Gold Metallic, which sounds considerably calmer than the actual sneaker.

Something tells us the milkshake description will stick.
