Formula 1's Coming for Fashion, So adidas Came for Formula 1
As shared in a landmark announcement late last year, adidas took the reins of Mercedes AMG PETRONAS' Formula 1 apparel. But what exactly makes this collaboration such a big deal?
Well, for starters, it sees two major German companies join forces, both of which are renowned for their impact on design, and culture at large. But, more importantly, it's the context of this coming-together that matters.
For long keeping to its own devices, Formula 1 has grown and preserved a distinct space in the sports world, most beloved by and reliant on European (and Australian!) race car fans. Recent popularity surges, however, have won the motorsport new fans: fashion people.
How so? In part, it’s due to what has happened in other sports before it. A good lot of Formula 1's offspring, too, has a penchant for both social media and style—and they ain't afraid to show it. Alongside this, formats like Netflix's Drive to Survive or even the Speedcat trend have lowered barriers and shone a light on the sport, its insignia, and the individuals beneath the helmets—to great avail.
Add to all this Louis Vuitton's newly commenced cooperation with the sport, and you'll comprehend the gravitas this adidas-Mercedes alliance truly holds in the face of fashion and Formula 1's deepening relationship.
As pioneers celebrated in and outside of their respective fields, both the performance gear brand and the car manufacturer could be wholly trusted to bring their A-game to this task.
