In Pearls & Lace, adidas’ Grown-Up Samba Is Looking Very Demure
The Samba has tried on just about every personality going, but apparently, it wasn’t done raiding the dressing-up box.
For its latest makeover, adidas gives the terrace staple a touch of old-school romance with cream leather, brown suede, and enough frills to make your grandmother’s curtains jealous.
The real pièce de résistance, though, is a removable pearl-adorned bow that sits across the laces, turning one of the most ubiquitous sneakers on the planet into something altogether more precious.
It’s a far cry from the Samba’s humble beginnings as an indoor football shoe, but that’s hardly news at this point. Over the past few years, the silhouette has been platformed, pony-haired, Miu Miu’d, and generally put through the fashion wringer. A little lace and a string of pearls almost feels restrained.
The best part? You can take the bow off whenever the occasion calls for a little less Jane Austen and a little more terrace casual.
Either way, the gum sole and familiar low-slung shape remain, because even a Samba in pearls still knows where it came from.
