The adidas Tokyo doesn't need much room to make a point. A few inches of orange will do. On the latest Royal Blue version, those unmistakable Three Stripes cut across the upper in a bright citrus shade, joined by an orange heel tab.

The effect is sharp enough to make this little sneaker visible beneath the widest trousers in your wardrobe. It helps that the blue is so deep.

Against it, the orange looks almost illuminated. Tiny sparkling points across the upper add another layer of light, giving the Tokyo a slightly dressed-up finish without interfering with its narrow shape. And narrow it is. The sneaker sits close to the ground on a thin gum sole, with a rounded front and a low opening that leave very little bulk around the foot.

From the side, there's almost more stripe than shoe. That's the charm of this particular colorway. It takes the tidy proportions you might want from an understated everyday sneaker and fills them with colors that refuse to behave quietly. Blue denim would let the orange accents do the work.

A dark trouser would give the whole shoe its moment. The Royal Blue/Orange/Gum adidas Tokyo is available in women's sizing on adidas' US website for $110, and appears among the brand's newest releases.

A small sneaker with a generous squeeze of orange. Seems like a fair serving.
