Jey Perie & Gogy Esparza's “Beirut Youth” Exhibition Is a Snapshot of Modern Lebanon
HVW8 Berlin has unveiled its latest exhibition, "Beirut Youth" by Gogy Esparza and Jey Perie. The multimedia exhibition explores "the universality of youth" while staying rooted in the Lebanese capital.
"We’ve decided to tell our story through the Beirut youth, from the club kids of Hamra to the young men and women growing up in Beirut's historic Palestinian refugee camp Shatila," Perie explains.
Across two visits to the Lebanese capital, Perie and Esparza captured the youth of the city. The result is a series of images shot on 35mm film, as well as four short films.
"Beirut Youth" isn't just a snapshot of the city's urban youth. The exhibition is also dedicated to raising funds for the Shatila refugee camp, which is the home to thousands of displaced Palestinians, as well as Syrian refugees. The artists have also released a photobook and T-shirt with 50 percent of takings going to the camp, both items are currently only available at HVW8 but an online store is in the works. You can also donate directly to youth services at Shatila here.
"Beirut Youth" is open now and runs until August 3. Head to HVW8 for more information and opening times.
