Founded in 1994 by Hardy Blechman, Maharishi revolves around its founder’s fascination with vintage clothing, especially ex-military garments. Having literally written a book on camouflage, it makes sense that Blechman’s Maharishi presents one of the most authentic vintage military-inspired collections around and has done since it was founded.
“The brand’s DNA is all about playing with opposites such as life and death, east and west, camouflage and high visibility, peace and military,” notes Blechman, who has managed to retain this DNA since 1994 when he offered up the first collection in 100 percent hemp. From pure hemp, Blechman diversified to a handful of military designs like the brand’s now-iconic Snow Pants.
Combining military references like rank insignias with traditional embroidery, often centered around zodiac signs, the label began to gain a following for its unique blend of utility and niche style. Since the early 2000s, it has cemented its place in the annals of streetwear, never straying too far from its signature designs, proving its mettle as a style staple of the modern age.
