After recently getting a first look at the upcoming season, HBO announces an April 2019 premiere date for season eight of Game of Thrones.

As IndieWire points out, the April release is significant because it allows Game of Thrones to be in contention for the 2019 Emmys, as in 2017, the show missed out on the opportunity after premiering season seven in July. GoT still, however, won an Emmy for Best Drama earlier this year, long after the season seven debut.

While we now know the much-anticipated new season will arrive next April, HBO has yet to disclose a specific date. The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is expected to consist of six feature-length episodes. Miguel Sapochnik is directing the sendoff, alongside David Nutter and series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

As always, stay tuned for additional details.
