Callum Turner’s Sweater and Jeans Have a Very Expensive Secret
The Louis Vuitton SS27 Trunk collection arrives without any trunks — but with all of the menswear essentials one could, theoretically, house inside the iconic monogrammed piece of luggage. Ceci n’est pas une pipe Louis Vuitton trunk, or whatever Magritte said.
This is the second Trunk collection, and it features creative director Pharrell Williams’s image of the Louis Vuitton man as an actual guy, rather than a runway concept. In this case, the guy is actor Callum Turner, who pores over a drab script in an outfit best described as the Trunk uniform for SS27: an ivory-knit sweater and a pair of mid-rise medium-wash straight-leg jeans.
The collection refines certain brand signatures such as savoir-faire tailoring and applies them to more everyday garments like a coordinating denim jacket and the aforementioned jeans, or a smoking slipper. Williams is able to really flex with the details, interpreting Louis Vuitton signatures like the VVN leather LV trunk tab as the capsule’s own sneaky logo, for those who know what to look for on collars or waisthems.
This is one of the better capsule initiatives from Pharell during his tenure at Louis Vuitton men’s, specifically for how tightly it’s edited. While the Substack fashion literati has been vocal about Williams’s confusion as to who the LV man is, and how his runways for the label seemingly cloak that in spectacle, Trunk emerges as something more illusory — if not just chiller.
There’s a lot of talk about the Louis Vuitton man, with not enough time spent on the man who is actually buying and wearing Louis Vuitton. The Trunk collections very clearly define that man, and use apt talent to do so.
