New Balance's Most Elderly Dad Shoe Has Gone Grandma (In a Good Way)
New Balance 1906 running shoes don't typically recall embroidered tablecloths. The quintessential techy dad sneaker more often looks like a futuristic runner straight out of Blade Runner (no pun intended).
But after seeing New Balance's summer-ready tie-dyed 1906 sneaker by Jack Harlow, it’s hard to stop thinking about the dad shoe going grandmacore.
First-look teasers reveal the Jack Harlow x New Balance 1906R sneaker updated with a dainty rose pattern across the toebox, looking kinda like a decorative cross-stitch you’d find on an classy old tablecloth or cloth napkin in an Italian-American grandmother’s “good” drawer for table settings (it’s a thing, trust me).
The rest of the 1906 shoe is done up in a dark pink floral motif, with velour touches on the tongue and laces, making them just lush enough to look like they just walked off the set of Bridgerton.
Leather details touch up the sneakers' upper and sides and with all of this going on, it’s hard to even tell that the sneaker is really, deep down, just a New Balance 1906, one of the brand’s longest-running models and one of its most-popular dad shoes?
Who knew it could be that cute?
Initially assumed to be a mere samples, Harlow has confirmed the elderly New Balance 1906 sneakers above to be an actual drop (even better, a collab). We're still waiting on an official release date, but here's to hoping they launch sooner rather than later.
If New Balance's 1906 was once the preferred Dad Shoe of Choice for actual dads seeking a sneaker to wear while mowing the lawn (or at least stylistically inspired by those styles), it's now effectively a closet staple for anyone with any sort of of-the-moment sneaker rotation.
And the brand lives up to the hype its techy runner generates, consistently dishing new refreshes to its classic shoes dropping all the time. Just last week, New Balance released one of the first iterations of a new series of 2002s in a leather and mesh mix in all red, a preppy and curb-worthy update to another normcore classic.
And that’s just one of dozens of New Balance updates and fresh colorways released so far in 2024 and there’s plenty more to come.
So if grandma-friendly roses and velour aren’t your thing, fear not! There’s almost certainly another sneakily fresh New Balance sneaker releasing in the very near future.
