Ahead of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games unveils the signature torch for the anticipated games. The torch will be used during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay, while also being showcased throughout Japan leading up to the games.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic torch resembles a cherry blossom, Japan's most beloved flower, which arrives each March. Specifically, the overall shape of the torch mimics a traditional Japanese “Sakura-mon“ cherry blossom emblem. The torch was formed using the same aluminium extrusion technology as Japan's famous bullet trains.

Furthermore, aluminum construction waste from temporary housing built following the Great East Japan Earthquake was used to make the torch, transforming the materials into a symbol of peace. In addition to the cherry blossom, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic torch depicts the shape of a flame, with five flames rising from the petals to unite at the center.
