Vans' signature skate shoes are so good that luxury labels constantly borrow their good taste. And yet, the coolest thing about Vans right now is that it's constantly evolving its footwear line, transforming familiar sneakers into all-new stunners.

The Vans Authentic needs no adjustments. It is an all-time classic, flawless since it debuted almost 60 years ago.

And yet, Vans found the one way to improve on the Authentic: The addition of a crushable heel.

Now, we're all but inured to the mule-ification of otherwise ordinary sneakers. Vans itself has dabbled in that field more than once (more than twice, even!), which seems fitting for a company that effectively perfected the slip-on shoe and, even in that field, continues to innovate.

But adding a crushable heel to the Vans Authentic is such a small, smart touch that only serves to add another dimension to a seemingly simple skate sneaker that's streamlined perfection at best and, at worst, unflappably understated.

Vans designer Greg Betty revealed the transformable Vans Authentic, complete with sumptuously stitched tonal canvas/suede upper, in early February ahead of the rollout of Vans Premium's Spring/Summer 2025 collection, which will presumably also include the wild studded Mary janes and textural "knit" Authentic shoes also included in his post.

All great stuff, to be sure. But man, the crushable heel Authentics are such a great idea.

The beauty of Vans' no-brainer skate shoes lies in how they boil down an essential shape to its very essence, utilizing only the most necessary details to maximize lightness and durability. Little wonder they've earned similar cultural durability to boot.

Vans' sneakers are design by reduction, with the results quite capably speaking for themselves.

With the wearer now able to squish the Vans sneaker's heel as they see fit, reforming a low-top lace-up into an easy-on, easy-off mule, the Authentic reaches a new level of utility. It's got more sturdiness than a mule but more ease than an ordinary laced shoe.
