Competition is a great thing. It pushes us to work harder and faster, and when we’re talking about competition within the sneaker world, the outcome is a slew of new technologies, each better than the last. One of the overarching highlights in sneaker developments of recent years is adidas 4D technology.

Breaking onto the scene a couple of years back, adidas 4D is growing every month, with new styles being treated to the high-tech update. The 4D structure is made with light and oxygen by way of Digital Light Synthesis. Sounds techy, right? It is. Carbon Digital Light Synthesis uses light and oxygen-permeable optics to make a 3D object which is then solidified through thermal baking.

The end product is a new era of sole unit design. The foundational lattice is super-lightweight and extremely supportive, making it the perfect starting point for the Three Stripes’ future running projects. But, alongside performance runners, we’re seeing adidas 4D inserts being applied to a range of lifestyle-suitable silhouettes lately, too.

The Futurecraft 4D is based on 17 years of running data to ensure that you get the smoothest ride possible with optimized spring-back after each step. We love the neutral version of the silhouette but the classic black & pale blue palette ranks highly, too.

With a more substantial upper than the Futurecraft, the 4DFWD is the model to go for if you're looking for a performance-lifestyle crossover. We're particularly taken by the 4DFWD Pulse model which features an engineered 4D insert to the heel, proving the versatility of the technology.

4D Fusio

Arguably the most extensive exploration of the adidas 4D technology yet, the 4D Fusio is a range to take note of. Expect to see this silhouette sweeping news feeds and shelves in years to come. With a range of bold and understated colorways alike, it boasts technical and style credentials in equal measure.
