At this point, adidas might be its own fiercest competitor. After its skillfully orchestrated Samba resurgence basically defined shoe trends for years to come, the German activewear giant is now pushing things in a different direction. From skinny kicks back to the days of chunk, we seem to be witnessing the ascent of the Adistar Control 5.

As the brand's definitive dad shoe, the Adistar 5 Control charms with a bulky, mesh encased silhouette. A combination of retro running shoe influences and modern performance-prone touches, the burgundy and baby blue version of the style, in particular, is worthy of attention.

Compared to its leopard fuzz iteration, this "Preloved Blue/Dark Brown/Grey Five" look, as is its official color title, reads as an almost minimalist, oddly compatible statement sneaker for the everyday.

In that sense, it's not dissimilar, actually, to the New York label WOODstack's recent take on the model and its contrastive pattern scheme.

At this point, the Adistar Control 5, much like some its lower-profile siblings, has grown a whole clan of both eccentric and evergreen spawn.

That said, the titular hue sits smack dab in the middle of that spectrum, between the more muted and more maximalist shades, with surprising versatility for how striking its clash of shades appears upon first glance.

From something of a rising star opposite its more slender-framed competitors, the Adistar has by now developed to become an entire sky full of celestial bodies.
