Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

In a new interview with USA Today, Endgame director duo Joe and Anthony Russo finally divulge why the fourth and final Avengers movie did not contain Marvel's normal post-credits scene.

The post-credits teasers have become a staple throughout Marvel's 22-film Cinematic Universe, now known as "The Infinity Saga" that kicked off with Iron Man 11 years ago.

"It was never in the cards," Joe Russo explained. "It was called Endgame for a reason. This is it. This is the ending. The book is closed on that chapter of the Marvel universe and a new book will get written."

Brother Anthony Russo added, "This was the first Marvel movie we've done where we weren't thinking about the future. There will be a future," he continued, "but it's not our responsibility."

Movie goers who did sit through to the end of the film weren't left totally empty-handed, however. Rather than a scene they were met with the noise of metal hitting metal — this, Joe Russo says, is a homage to 2008's Iron Man movie.

"It's really just an homage, sort of a little bookend. It started it and it ends it."
