Balmain's Fresh Start Entails An Even Fresher Sneaker
Hard to believe, we know, but spring is almost here, which means one thing and one thing only: time to park the winter beaters that have been glued to your feet for what feels like all 58 endless days of 2026, and make room for something leaner… yes, we’re still talking about the flat sole sneaker.
Because evidently, we’re still obsessed with grounding ourselves, and Balmain just perfected the landing.
With the Racer 45, Balmain is entering its svelte era. The house’s first legitimate thin-sole silhouette pulls direct DNA from ‘70s marathon runners, the kind originally built for actual mileage, but elevates the idea so it feels less “PE class” and more Paris front row.
First teased in the Pre-Spring 2026 collection, the Racer 45 was expanded for SS26 and is now cranking up the energy with a fresh arsenal of high-spec fabrics and seasonal colorways — neutrals, greens and blues. The shape is aerodynamic, the branding is low-key (spot the discreet PB logo) and the vibe is entirely genderless. By checking every box in the "slim sneaker" playbook, the Racer 45 was destined to be a heavy hitter. And you know what? It is.
It’s the ultimate palette cleanser for your rotation. These new-gen mesh builds lean into a technical, high-ventilation vibe that stays breathable without losing any of that signature house bite, as do the suede and quilted versions.
Low to the floor, elongated through the toe, and proportionally sharp, it suddenly makes your wardrobe feel like it has to work a little less. And though they might seem like a far cry from the French luxury house's usual, vamp-style heels, these speedy, slender lace-ups are just as razor-clean.
A bit late to the function, sure, but it’s hard to hold a grudge when the entrance hits this hard — especially when timed so well, as a palette cleanser of sorts, with the imminent debut of the maison's new creative director, Antonin Tron.
