Bottega Veneta has always led the pack when it comes to leather pieces. Of course, the label’s famous Intrecciato bags make up a large chunk of its leather supremacy, but this season, the brand has gone above and beyond to assert its dominance.

One of the big highlights of SS23 fashion weeks was the number of photos surfacing of Bottega Veneta’s exciting leather experiments (and obviously Kate Moss wearing them on the runway).

Primarily, a pair of distressed jeans that weren’t a pair of jeans at all but a pair of straight-leg leather pants masquerading as denim. Even up close, the patina is so realistic that this pair looks like denim, but hands-on, it’s a whole different story.

The same goes for this checked shirt. From a distance, it’s a classic checked overshirt, likely cut from flannel or heavyweight cotton. Incorrect. It’s masterfully made from Bottega Veneta’s famous Italian leather before being printed with a worn-in checked finish.

Alongside Loewe’s LEGO-like leather pieces shown for SS23 and Rick Owens’ experimentation with transparent leather, Bottega Veneta’s leather denim and shirt round out a season of bold advances. It’s the kind of thing that fill us with confidence about the near future of high fashion: even leather, a material as old as clothing itself, can be translated into new and exciting forms under the supervision of names like Mathieu Blazy.
