New Balance’s Clean-Cut Skate Shoe Just Got a Nice Update
New Balance’s 508 has always been one of those skate shoes that looks pretty good even if you have no intention of stepping on a board.
This latest version keeps that same low-key appeal, but gives the Brandon Westgate-designed silhouette a rather nice update in Reflection and Fairweather Blue.
The 508 takes its cues from classic skate footwear without going full bulky. The profile stays low, while the suede and mesh upper gives it that slightly scruffy, old-school feel that works so well on a skate shoe. The blue detailing adds a little something extra without being overwhelming.
What makes this one particularly easy to get behind is how little it tries to do. No giant sole, no overly technical-looking panels, no attempt to turn a skate shoe into a gorpy running shoe. It’s simply a good-looking New Balance with enough character to stop it feeling basic.
And despite being designed with Westgate for skating, the 508 doesn’t require the rest of your wardrobe to follow suit. It has that same easy appeal you’d expect from a classic New Balance, just with a little more attitude.
Basically, a skate shoe that doesn’t need to prove it’s a skate shoe.
