Abdul El-Sayed's Watch Collection Is Proof He Knows Ball
If you want to know what Abdul El-Sayed, the impressively jacked epidemiologist-turned-senator-elect, is all about, look to his wrist. Michigan's first Muslim senator is as much a man of supremely good taste as he is a man of the people, evinced by both his crystal-clear campaign messaging and his go-to timepieces.
Though he's rocked a handful of timepieces that the Hollywood Reporter — admittedly not a bastion of stylistic insight — recently deemed "geek chic," El-Sayed's watch collection is better seen as symbolic of the man himself: handsome, intelligent, unpretentious. Alongside his preferred black shirt and dark jeans, he's been seen wearing an Apple Watch (dude is a health nut) and Shinola (Michigan pride), but in the lead-up to his commanding victory for Michigan's senate seat, he's been repping two particular watches.
One is a Omega Speedmaster, a vintage piece according to some randos online — and the watch he wore at his celebratory press conference on October 3 — and the other is a Mühle-Glashütte S.A.R. Rescue-Timer, a hyper-specific model produced by a smaller German company.
These are El-Sayed's higher-end watches, given that his Shinola is sub-$1k, but to be clear: none of his staples are "expensive" in watch terms.
Given that your average "luxury" watch, like a Rolex or Omega, starts in the high four figures and can go up to five, $5,000 watches are sometimes considered "entry-level luxury." El-Sayed's collection is full of watches that hover around half that, ranging between $2,000 and $3,000.
Put plainly, that ain't all that pricey as far as watches go. And given that El-Sayed is a medical doctor, that's quite a reasonable budget to keep.
But the interesting thing with El-Sayed's watches isn't their price but their specificity and versatility. Simply, El-Sayed "knows his shit," as a recent Reddit comment put it.
Dude isn't just a policy wonk. He's a watch wonk, too.
