Pharrell Williams & adidas Are Coming for Your Water Shoes
Pharrell Williams’ partnership with the Three Stripes has always lived at the intersection of human-centric philosophy and alien utility. Expanding his Virginia narrative into aquatic-inspired lifestyle footwear, the Louis Vuitton creative director drops his newest outdoor-ready silhouette. The adidas Originals x Pharrell Williams PW Water Moc transforms the humble water shoe into a major statement piece.
The PW Water Moc leans into the amphibious footwear movement that has evolved from gorp while maintaining Pharrell’s distinct design language.
Stripping away the excess bulk of traditional sneakers, the model embraces a barefoot-like, sock-fitting silhouette that bridges functionality with a bold palette, something that’s always been a signature of Pharrell.
The upper is constructed from fast-drying, ultra-flexible neoprene that molds tightly around the foot for a customized fit. An elasticated ankle collar and adjustable toggle drawcord heel lace ensure locked-in security during wet conditions, while signature Virginia co-branding subtly accents the vamp and heel loop.
Arguably the highlight of the shoe is the sole unit. The shoe features a low-profile rubber outsole equipped with drainage channels and multi-directional siping. This is a perfect example of functional design becoming a visual anchor point.
The adidas x Pharrell Williams PW Water Moc is a divisive design and we’ve no doubt that there’ll be back and forth about it online. But after all, Pharrell doesn’t really do things by half measure. Is this yet another case of Pharell never being wrong, just early? Time will tell.
