Sunglasses, aside from the obvious use of protecting your eyes from the sun, are multi-functional. Other uses include masking the unsightly effects of a late night, providing some anonymity if you see someone you don't want to in the streets, and they can be a key component of personal style, adding a touch of je ne sais quoi to any outfit.

However, buying sunglasses can be overwhelming, especially when shopping online. There are shapes, frame types, and colors, not to mention a huge range of brands, to maneuver. Luckily, we've curated a selection of the best shades available now and organised them according to your preferred style.

Square

As a general rule, you can work out which pair of sunglasses will suit you by selecting a frame that is opposite to your face shape. For example, for those with a slightly rounder face, an angular accessory will complement your facial features with a bit of edge.

Our four-pointed highlights for SS20 include a pair of transparent blue acetate shades with pink lenses from Jacquemus, or if you're looking for something more affordable there's a pair of plastic sunglasses from Urban Outfitters in a shade of matte mint green.

Rectangular/Oval

Oval or rectangular frames are a popular choice that will suit most faces. As the trend for micro-sized Matrix sunglasses is waning, brands are focusing more on creating bigger frames which allow more room for experimentation with color and pattern.

Some of our favorite SS20 options come from Los Angeles brand Crap Eyewear, a new label providing an antithesis to the expensive and too-serious sunglasses sector with affordable models in loud, retro colorways.

Extra

Sunglasses are also an opportunity to be needlessly extra, acting as a surefire way to level up an otherwise neutral outfit. Our favorite options for SS20 include Rick Owens' Shield model which covers half the face with a visor-like oversized frame inlaid with metal studs and a slender stainless steel rim. Elsewhere, the Gucci logo sunglasses feature an interlocking "G" stamped on the lens, ornate gold metal ridges, and silvery mother of pearl tips.
