Why Do Brands Keep Returning to Fashion's Favorite Florist?
The phrase “florals for spring” may (deservedly) elicit a Munchian scream, but what about florals for winter, or summer, or fall? For Danish fashion designer Cecilie Bahnsen, there’s never been a wrong season for slapping flowers onto fabric. Since launching her brand a little over a decade ago, Bahnsen has made this motif a cornerstone of her brand, alongside a specific flavor of avant-garde femininity.
Establishing this easily adaptable signature early has paid off. Her flower, like its real-world counterpart, is uber-adaptable; compared to Bahnsen's other staples, like her voluminous babydoll dresses, it slots cleanly into any product category.
You can spot a bloom of “Bahnsen florals” in her own wares, sure, but you’re just as likely to see some flowery thing from her sold at a far more mass-market brand: this past week, she unveiled her second UNIQLO collection and dropped her fourth with The North Face. She’s also released girlishly updated takes on ASICS silhouettes since 2023, and softened up Alpha Industries bomber jackets in January.
All these far larger brands get a lot from these simple florals, and it’s easy to see why. Each collaboration carries the credibility of a designer who trained under the likes of John Galliano and Erdem, made the LVMH Prize finals in 2017, and counts BLACKPINK’s Jennie as a fan.
For Bahnsen, the partnerships also serve as proof of concept: her brand is built on the dual belief that couture-level quality can be applied to your everyday wardrobe, and that feminine touches can infiltrate any space — be it sportswear or military outerwear.
When a few simple flowers turn a fleece, a Nuptse, or a sneaker into “a Bahnsen” that actually sells, brands will keep coming back for that as long as it works.
