What do Dutch collective Daily Paper and Brazilian-born footwear giants Havaianas have in common? If you guessed conservation and a desire to give back – you’re right.

To Amsterdam-based culture icons Daily Paper, bringing the spotlight to various cultures and community incentives is just another day in the office, and each season the label continues to give back by virtue of its work with African NGOs.

For Spring/Summer 2022, this came through with its collection titled “Protect Paradise”, which was created with the intention of supporting the island nation of Mauritius in its efforts to promote and enforce conservation via the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation. Now, the Amsterdam brand is supplementing the range through a collaboration with Havaianas.

The partnership unites the brands to bring awareness to the conservation and preservation of Mauritius’ endangered plant and animal species. The joint-venture emphasizes how Daily Paper and Havaianas are dedicated to playing a part in the preservation of the wild places that their respective communities are involved with. It can be noted that Havaianas is no newcomer to giving back either – the tropical brand has been helping to fund conservation and restoration projects in the Amazon for almost 20 years.

For the design, Daily Paper design director, Abderrahmane Trabsini, was inspired by initiatives taken by locals of the island nation to preserve its sensitive biodiversity. Not just another jungle print, Protect Paradise is a celebration of Mauritian wildlife, and the aesthetic is intended for impact. The pattern, which features on Daily Paper’s Spring/Summer collection and the collaboration, forms an infographic of sorts that highlights the native and often endangered flora and fauna of the island.

The appeal of Havaianas’ flip-flops is in their simplistic design, practicality, and effortless style, which has helped them assume mass appeal across all corners of society. Just as familiar with locals in the label’s homeland of Brazil as it is to surfers who've adopted the brand internationally for its comfort and laid-back steeze, Havaianas has marked itself as the sandal of the people in tropical and coastal regions, and the collection is a tribute to that.
