Editors Notes: As we are adjusting to life without thick socks and winter boots, open-toe footwear is once again on the agenda.
Spring/summer collections are hitting the shelves and so far, we've already seen a pair of BLOHM slides that bear a resemblance to MF DOOM's famous mask and a HOKA design that translates the label's expertise in running shoes into a piece of open-toe footwear. However, in my opinion, Dries has got the early lead in the race to create 2022's hottest sandal.
The silhouette is characterized by two thick straps that comfortably hold your feet in place, connected by velcro. However, it is up-close that you get the best look at these sandals, crafted from breathable, perforated mesh, the texture of the material is what makes it stand out.
Below those straps, a sawtooth rubber outsole gives the shoe a slightly rugged, hiking sandal edge. And the cherry on top is the combination of brown and navy blue across this shoe.
The sandals continue the puffy theme from the Belgian designer's previous season's footwear. Back then, it was padded leather loafers and mules which caught our attention and which we likened to "sleeping bags for your feet."
Taken from the label's SS22 collection, which Van Noten told us was based around "Clothes to go and have fun in. Just enjoy things," these are not going to keep you warm like those padded designs, but still have that cozy look. The puffy material is bound to keep you comfy, whether paired with socks or left alone to let your feet breathe as in the collection's lookbook.
Although they are admittedly more futuristic-looking slides, it's also worth noting that both Rombaut and Balmain have been creating their own puffed-up sandal selection as of late. It's a bit early to say, but this might not be the first time we talk about puffy sandals this season.
