As an exclusive cover story for Billboard, Kendrick Lamar was given the opportunity to sit down and chat with one of his biggest icons, N.W.A. Kendrick, a fellow Compton native who claims “Anything that I do, at all, has come from what y’all [N.W.A] done,” brought up a number of topics to the seminal rap group, such as how Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella balance their work and family lives, their favorite rappers in the game (which include Kendrick, Pusha T and Drake), their legacy, and the impact left by their late friend and former member Eazy-E.

““He knew before we knew what was going to pop,” explains Ren. And though Dre admits that though he and Eazy “argued night and day,” it was “always out of mutual respect. Always out of a desire to get the best. And always settled with a cool compromise.””

Watch the full conversation between Kendrick Lamar and N.W.A’s DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and MC Ren below. Afterwards, be sure to listen to Dr. Dre’s Compton and find out 5 key facts about N.W.A before seeing Straight Outta Compton, which hits theaters tomorrow.
