Part of the undying popularity of Nike’s Air Max silhouettes is that they’ve got as much charm when they’ve been battered over the space of several years as they do when they’re box-fresh. In fact, many — us among them — would argue that a pair of Air Max trainers should be worn-in. Another holder of this view? Maison Martin Margiela.

The latest MM6 sneaker comes in a very recognizable form for Air Max heads out there. While it’s not like-for-like, the MM6 Castlerock Sneaker bares a striking resemblance to the Nike Air Max 95 — which, as it happens, looks set for a big year in light of its recent collaboration with London label Corteiz.

From the toe box shape to the paneled upper build, there is no denying that the MM6 Castlerock Sneakers are, at the very least, lightly inspired by the Air Max 95. And it’s not out of character for Margiela, either. The label’s fan-favorite Replica Sneaker makes secret of the fact that it takes direct inspiration from the classic German Army Trainer, posing an interesting question about the difference between copies and homages within fashion.

It’s a question that many designers have asked and one that Margiela definitely intentionally worked into the Replica Sneaker. In the same way, the MM6 Castlerock Sneakers take a classic trainer and reinvent it with luxury materials and typically eye-catching Margiela palettes and finishes.
