Double Tap to Zoom

Great brands are built around individuals with strong points of view, rich life experience, and a real purpose.

Our Legacy has always been one of those brands. By tapping into culture beyond fashion — through music or sport or food — its founders have built a label that doesn’t just make good clothes, but makes life more interesting.

Growing up in Sweden in the early ’90s, long before co-founding Our Legacy, Jockum Hallin dreamt of snowboarding. “I took it very seriously,” he says. “I started skateboarding early, but since we’re in Sweden, it's cold, and there’s a lot of snow, so I leaned into snowboarding way more.” He spent summers on Norwegian glaciers working as a “digger,” shaping jumps and halfpipe walls so he could ride year round. “And then other things started to fall into place,” he says.

Things like starting one of the coolest and most influential fashion brands on the planet. “You take that snowboarding or skateboarding thing, and put that into the fashion context,” Hallin says. “It was just a natural transition into that world when we started Our Legacy.”

While Hallin was finding himself on a Norwegian glacier, something else was happening in Swedish snowboarding. A young ripper named Ingemar Backman was taking the still nascent sport to new heights — literally. In 1996, Backman set a new record, launching the then-highest air ever out of a quarterpipe in Riksgränsen. A few years later, he was competing in the first Winter Olympics snowboarding competition, Nagano ’98, and — wait for it… he was decked out in a kit from the storied Japanese outerwear brand Goldwin.

As an epic full-circle moment, when I spoke to Hallin last week via Zoom, he was on his way to the snowy mountains of Japan with Backman himself to shoot some photos and videos for Our Legacy’s new snowboard collection with Goldwin.

“Ingemar is one of the absolute greats,” Hallin says. “He won competitions for sure, but what he had most of was air and style. Ingemar has been such a big inspiration for me since I was a young teenager, always leading with a smile, curiosity, and creativity, showing that having fun and doing it with style is way more important than trying to collect points with some number on your chest.”

He added: “To have created outerwear he is stoked to wear, and to be able to go to Nozawa Onsen outside the Nagano region with Ingemar to ride powder, shoot, and film together for this collection has been amazing. It feels like I’m getting to live the snowboard-pro dreams I had as a teenager.”

The Our Legacy x Goldwin collab consists of highly-functional, minimal GORE-TEX outerwear, cut the Our Legacy way with a boxier fit, as a well as a PERTEX insulator vest, a hooded waffle thermal first layer, a POLARTEC earflap trapper hat, and an oversized CORDURA travel bag.
