Double Tap to Zoom

Next to their apparent affinity for couture cowboys and island leisure, checks and stripes, designers appear to have ushered in an era of armless garments. Be it spins on the classic rib, knitted vests with nothing beneath a plunging v neck, or straight up halter tops: this summer, all signals suggest we ought to go sleeveless.

There's something sporty if not low-key bloke-y going on here, but with touches of heightened femininity, too – a potpourri of timely undoings of cultural tropes, splattered across, woven or cut into the mere yard of fabric it takes to sew a singlet.

Via Browns, we thus wanted to present to you the surprising versatility of the tank trend.

JW Anderson Trompe-lœil Tank

Jonathan Anderson's surrealism knows no bounds; even given the most spatially limited of surfaces, he will manage to concoct a cooky something (atop) of it you'll want to wear.

AMI Paris Neutral Ribbed Tank

Alexandre Mattiussi's AMI has never been a frilly brand to begin with, thankfully so. So, his pretty straightforward co-opting of the silhouette in question is both unsurprising and appreciated.

Grassy green sweater vests like it could be worn over a button up, sure, but we find this particular, slightly boxy and oversized iteration is best worn standalone.

Y/Project Jersey Tank

Glenn Martens' aesthetic could be described using many an adjective – minimalist, we'd argue, isn't necessarily one of them. This understated tank top with its delicate collar detailing begs to differ.

LU'U DAN Logo Print Tank

There's a nostalgic y2k-ness inherent to graphic print tops like this one that makes us think we'd have been the coolest kid at school 20-something years ago, strutting the recess runway. We venture that whoever'd wear this in 2024 might be the coolest at their office job that day, too.

J. Lindberg Knitted Vest

The stark white-on-black in this example is a simple but highly effective means to the end of elevating a mundane item of clothing to something you'd want to style an outfit around.

Seventh Zipped Vest

There's no speaking of sleeveless fashions without also mentioning armless outerwear. Though technically intended as a layer of many, why not run with the times and wear it on its own?

MM6 Maison Margiela Multi-Pocket Gilet

Same goes for MM6's feature; a chromecore-ian, military-inspired gilet with pockets aplenty, fit for a run or a rave.

LUEDER Maroon Knitted Vest

This – albeit faintly – crimson knit top only gradually reveals itself to the squinting viewer. The color, the hardware, the tailoring – with every wear and every glimpse you'll discover something new to enjoy about a piece you initially suspected was just an undershirt.
