adidas' flat sneakers are so up. Yes, in terms of general popularity, but also in a more literal sense, thanks to a new collaboration with Australian retailer Up There.

In the spirit of the New Year, the Three Stripes and Up There teamed up to create a brand-spanking-new sneaker model, the adidas Melbourne.

This shoe is the latest addition to adidas' City Series franchise and is heavily inspired by Australian tennis legend Rod Laver and the running spikes worn during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. The green and white upper and leather tongue mirror hallmarks of Laver's namesake sneaker that came out in 1970.

Retro nods to the aforementioned sneaker are present throughout, including the breathable mesh upper, suede paneling, and worn-in "Made by Up There" adidas logo on the tongue, a nod to the Australian-made adidas Rome sneaker.

These individual components give the sneaker a vintage flair that is so of the moment it circles all the way back around to being a modern marvel.

Unlike the OG Rod Laver sneaker, though, which has a strong Stan Smith energy about it thanks to its lack of a visible Three Stripes, the adidas Melbourne sports a rich green leather Three Stripes with a matching heel tab.

The adidas Melbourne drops on January 30, priced at $158, which still constitutes a New Year's drop as far as I'm concerned.
