There’s a new girl around on the streets and beaches of Miami, Florida. She has starred as a model in campaigns for YEEZY and GUESS, and as an actress in one of Romeo Santos’s recent music videos. At 22 years old, before doing any huge “mainstream” work, she has accumulated more than five million followers on Instagram. Her name is Yovanna Ventura.
Ventura, who is of Dominican heritage, began courting serious media attention when she was just 18. Now though, you just get the feeling that the big time is right around the corner. And nowhere is that clearer than over on her IG feed, where her followers are given daily doses of #fitspo and shots from far-flung locations around the globe.
We recently sat down with Ventura to discuss her career goals, how she stays motivated in the gym, and what she thinks are the ultimate dos and don’ts of posting on the ‘gram.
How old are you?
Where are you from, and where are you currently living?
I have a Dominican heritage, but I was born and currently live in Miami, Florida.
What’s your occupation?
I’m a model, actress and social influencer.
How did you get into modeling?
I’ve always had a passion for modeling. It was almost like a dream I always had. Then around a year ago, I met my manager and it all grew from there. We had the same vision and were able to execute it together. My motivation was, and always will be, to be successful enough to provide for my family and make them proud of my achievements.
People seem to love the #fitspo on your Instagram — when did you start hitting the gym?
I started going to the gym when I was around seventeen. It really helps me with handling stress, to stay healthy and active. Of course, it also helps me to stay toned and looking good.
How often do you train and for how long?
I train around three times a week for two hours, give or take. I mostly work out my lower body by doing squats, lunges, deadlifts, donkey kicks and side lunges.
What’s always in your gym bag?
I actually don’t carry a gym bag. All I really need is my water bottle and my headphones. I always listen to hip-hop, which keeps me moving, motivated and in good spirits.
You have a huge following on Instagram now — do you have any dos and don’ts for posting?
Of course. For the dos: always play around with filters; make sure you have the perfect lighting for selfies; and always try to incorporate an animal into the picture if possible. As for the don’ts: just try not to look uncomfortable.
Are there any downsides to having such a huge following?
Negative comments. When you have such a large following, people can hurt you sometimes but, at this point, they really just push me to be better.
Do you ever think about giving social media up?
No, I will never give up because the positive will always outweigh the negative.
You recently played the lead in Romeo Santos’s “Bella y Sensual” music video, how was that?
It was truly amazing. Working with such iconic figures and being able to represent my Latin roots was really satisfying because that’s a really important part of who I am.
How did the involvement with the YEEZY Season 6 campaign come about?
The YEEZY team initially reached out to my manager for me to be one of the models in the lookbook. We didn’t know at the time it would eventually be part of a big ad campaign. We were surprised to see it in Times Square and all over NY. It was a surprise and such an honor.
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Hopefully some acting roles. It has always been a goal of mine to be part of a film and it’s definitely one of my goals in 2018.
