While Seth Rogen has been quarantining with “a truly ungodly amount of weed,” HBO Max was busy acquiring worldwide rights to his comedy, An American Pickle.

Rogen stars as Herschel Greenbaum, a struggling laborer who immigrates to America in 1920. Greenbaum is — quite literally — pickled in time, after he falls into a vat of brined cucumbers and emerges in Brooklyn, 100 years later. Hijinks ensue when he tracks down his nerdy great-grandson, who is also played by Rogen.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be partnering with HBO Max to release this film,” Rogen said. “We worked very hard and put as much of ourselves in this story as possible. We’re very proud of the end result and we can’t wait for people to get to see it.”

HBO Max bought the film from Sony Pictures, which means An American Pickle won't be delayed by theatre closure due to the coronavirus impact. Instead, it's expected to reach audiences via the new streaming platform later this year.
