Disney's Marvel Studios has officially started production on the sequel to Captain Marvel, Deadline reports. Brie Larson is set to return as Carol Danvers aka the titular Captain Marvel.

The first Captain Marvel arrived in theaters last year and banked an impressive $1.13 billion in the global box office. It was the 22nd Marvel Studios movie, but the first with a woman as the lead hero.

It's unknown whether the sequel will follow a similar narrative — former military pilot taps into cosmic energies to harness ridiculous strength and save the world from otherwordly forces, basically — but The Hollywood Reporter states it'll shift from a ’90s setting to present day.

Rising Marvel writer Megan McDonnell (WandaVision) is in talks to pen the script. Anna Boden and Ryan Flek will not be returning to direct the film (though they may stay in the MCU to direct another project).

Apparently Marvel is looking to bag a female filmmaker for Captain Marvel 2. Updates to follow.
