Brand: Heaven by Marc Jacobs

Season: Fall/Winter 2021

Buy: Online at Heaven's website

Release Date: October 10

Editor's Notes: Heaven, Marc Jacobs' cool older sister label, is dropping a capsule collection paying homage to Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides.

An adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides's 1993 novel of the same name, Coppola's directorial debut wasn't immediately well-received by audiences when it released in 2000. But in the years following, the movie gained a fervent cult following, thanks to its romanticized look at teenage girlhood, suburban ennui, and mental illness.

The Virgin Suicides also marked the beginning of Coppola's working relationship with Kirsten Dunst, the star of the film — as well as Heaven's new collection.

Pieces including a mesh long-sleeve tee and hoodie are printed with now-iconic stills of Dunst, as well as a shot of the actor by Corinne Day (whose behind-the-scenes photos of the film are immortalized in a rare book).

A silk skirt, button-down shirt, cross-body bag, and emerald green blazer also bear images from the film. A surefire hit rounds out the collection: a cropped baby tee is printed with script lettering featured in the movie's opening title sequence.

The Virgin Suicides has long served as fashion fodder. The film's distinctly '70s costumes are well-documented, and recently, ERL channeled the movie — specifically, the character of Trip Fontaine — in its FW21 campaign.

The release of Heaven's capsule coincides with World Mental Health Day. Thus, $18 from every sale of the baby tee will benefit The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Community Center — an organization that provides crucial wellness services to LGBTQ+ youth, who are at high risk of mental health issues and suicidal thoughts.
