Kinglsey Coman Wants to Take the Path of Past PUMA Legends
There was a notable omission from the gossip pages during the recent January football transfer window. The flying french world cup winner Kingsley Coman had just signed a new 5-year contract with his club Bayern Munich which meant for the first time in many years Coman swerved any transfer talk. Kinglsey plays with the efficiency and speed that aligns perfectly with Bayern's style of play and the long line of wingers that have come before him at the club. Being constantly linked with the world's greatest clubs is down to Kingsley's consistency and reliability to deliver on the biggest stages, all wrapped in a package of style and swagger. This is something PUMA noticed, as they quickly snapped Kingsley as an ambassador from under the noses of their rivals. Indeed signed for his footballing ability, pace, and being the perfect fit to their new speed silo, the Ultra, Coman is also an appealing prospect because of his off-field personality and style. A trait many brands rate as highly as ability when looking where to put their budget into the players that rep them.
PUMA's already putting Coman to good use off the pitch; he recently stepped out as the face for the new CA PRO Classic sneaker. Like Kingsley, the CA PRO puts a modern twist on classic styling, not overstated but adaptable.
Coman joined PUMA during a flurry of activity from the big cat, who has been moving big in the player market, tying down deals with football heavyweights Neymar, Pulisic, and Jorginho all in the space of a year. Coman puts his move down partly to the exciting projects PUMA has in the pipeline but following in the footsteps of sporting legends like Pele, Maradona, and Bolt also made the decision easier. "I have big respect for what Usain Bolt made. Those (Tommie Smith, Pele, Walter Clyde Frazier, Maradona, Bolt) are legendary people and are sources of inspiration."
Coman follows the legacy of a long line of PUMA legends, all of whom stamped their influences on the courts, tracks, and pitches they set foot on. Apart from legend status, what some of PUMA's leading ambassadors all had in common was a unique and innate style. This is something Coman prides himself on "I like to be different, but also be able to fit everywhere. So, it’s a mix between simplicity and uniqueness. "I’m versatile, I can change style often. Not because I saw it on someone, but because I like different things."
Like Neymar before him, Coman is also hoping that his influence at PUMA can go beyond being an ambassador and he can have some design input too, something he is already dipping his toes into with his friends Paris-based brand CHMPS PARISSE. "It's very nice when we can influence the culture, and this is something that I started to do with CHMPS PARISSE and PUMA soon, hopefully."
