This Rolex Ain't Your Typical Rolex
Rolex’s new GMT-Master II watch ain’t your typical Rolex watch collection.
For starters, it features a 24-hour graduated two-color bezel and a black lacquer dial that bears the inscription ‘GMT-Master II’ in green, echoing the color of the triangle-tipped 24-hour hand.
Secondly, the GMT-Master II – the successor to the OG GMT-Master launched in 1955 – is also driven by calibre 3285, a feature that enables it to display the date and an additional time zone in 24-hour format, plus the hours, minutes, and seconds.
Then there’s the robust 40mm Oyster casing that protects the GMT-Master II. Not only does this super-sturdy case guarantee waterproofing to a depth of 100 meters (a dive far deeper than I’d ever take a Rolex, personally), but it also sits alongside an integral crown guard that screws down securely against the case.
The evolution of the GMT-Master II is also evident with the addition of platinum coating applied via PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition), a dead techy vaporisation coating technique that involves the transfer of material on an atomic level under vacuum conditions.
The collection comprises two watches in total: the first that's fitted with an Oyster bracelet, and another that sports a Jubilee bracelet.
Put simply, the GMT-Master Il is the ultimate cosmopolitan Rolex watch and can be worn for full-time globetrotters meandering through the wilderness and office workers alike.
That said, while the GMT-Master II isn’t your average Rolex (if there is such a thing), it does carry the same Superlative Chronometer certification as all other high-end Rolex (Rolexi?) — a component that ensures high-level performance on the wrist... as well as on the eyes.
