The Only Thing Wilder Than Saint Laurent's $4,500 Sled Is Its $12,500 Snowboard
If there’s any equipment you need for a winter holiday, Saint Laurent has it. But it won’t come cheap. The brand’s Rive Droite lifestyle line is kitting out everyone from stylish skiers to those engaged in the far more niche sport of snow scootering, creating minimalist outdoor gear at eye-wateringly high prices.
At this time of year, when the world’s most esteemed ski resorts have just opened their doors, there’s an inevitable flood of high-fashion labels cashing in on high society’s favorite winter activity through monogrammed ski jackets and overtly branded goggles. But Saint Laurent takes it one step further.
The brand’s website has all the “essentials” covered, like water-repellent $3,100 ski pants that flare out at the bottom to allow space for hairy $1,700 shearling snow boots. For riding, the brand collaborated with Zai, the self-proclaimed “world's finest ski manufacturer,” to create a $12,500 black carbon-fiber snowboard and wooden $11,605 skis.
For context, these skis are double the price of those Zai made for Moncler in 2017, and a Gucci snowboard will set you back a comparatively meagre $7,000. In the land of exorbetant high fashion ski gear, Saint Laurent rules the roost.
But Saint Laurent’s snow collection isn’t only the dearest of all the fashion brands, it also has the most diverse offering. The house's new “Snow Editions” collection also includes a $4,500 sled, made of wood carved and assembled in Germany and, as with most Rive Droite items, painted black. Many luxury labels cater to skiiers, but Saint Laurent also includes sledgers. And scooterers.
Yes, this new batch of snow gear joins the Saint Laurent Snowscoot, released at the beginning of this year, which is similar to a regular scooter except made to glide down snowy mountains. Saint Laurent created it with Eretic, a company that specializes solely in these winterized scooters.
Of course, it’d be Saint Laurent Rive Droite that creates such a varied selection of snow gear. The lifestyle label does everything, from music-themed advent calendars to wooden board games to high-end record players. The diffusion line has even opened the first Sushi Park restaurant outside of LA.
While mainline Saint Laurent focuses on suits with the sharpest of shoulders and handbags of the butteriest leather, items that have helped propel the brand to the top spot on Lyst’s latest “Hottest Brands” ranking, Rive Droite is more interested in turning anything and everything into a stylish Saint Laurent-ified object.
