Painting with a paintbrush? Child’s play. Painting with little brushes attached to fishing hooks for Japanese fly-fishing brand SOUTH2 WEST8? Just another day in Montana for artist Ben Miller. 

Write it down on paper, and the idea of these two geographically distant entities coming together for one of the season's most exciting outerwear collabs feels like a game of Mad Libs.

A blank line here, to write in a random state (no shade to Montana), and another there, to jot down the little-known conservationist and artist. Ah, and one more for the Tenkara fly-fishing apparel company turned absurdly steezy clothing brand. 

Few other outdoor brands are popping off quite as hard as Kaname Nagaoka’s sport-meets-style label, which is to be expected when its parent company, Nepenthes, is also home to Needles and Engineered Garments. S2W8 has notched collabs with everything from Supreme and Palace to Oakley Factory Team and Brain Dead. 

But here, the end result doesn’t just hit; it feels genuinely true to the brand's spirit. The technical parkas, jackets, and pants come covered in Miller’s signature abstract paintings — like camo by way of Joan Mitchell or Jackson Pollock — and continue an ongoing partnership with Miller that began with the brand’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection. 

Swirling, slightly kaleidoscopic, and built for outerwear that can stand up to the elements on a long day in the great outdoors? This is exactly the kind of product you’d imagine coming from a fishing gear brand and an artist who spends his days riverside, pole in hand, painting the scenery.
