Launched in 1984, adidas’ ZX series is one of the brand’s longest-running and most successful verticals. The franchise was set up to create running sneakers for both training and competition, but thanks to its comfort and eye-catching design, was soon adopted by subcultures across Europe.

As a technical running trainer, the adidas ZX has, for a long time, been testing ground for adidas’ new technologies such as the Torsion system and Soft Cell cushioning. With each new technology, the ZX became further and further engrained in adidas fans’ rotations, and more and more suited to everyday life and style. But, with such an ardent following, each new generation of the ZX series has to be updated respectfully, pulling heavy aspirations from the original ‘80s iterations.

The newest development in the ZX lineage is the ZX 2K. Described by adidas as “Sensation over logic. Celebrating comfort in whatever form it takes,” the ZX 2K incorporates a Boost sole unit for a new lease of comfort. While there are understated, retro-fuelled colorways, one of the defining features of the adidas ZX 2K range is its vivid wrap-around gradient. Seen as the innovator of the Originals family, it makes sense that the ZX 2K features a forward-thinking palette alongside new-age technology.

Since 1984, the Adidas ZX series has been broken ground for the models that followed. ZX 2K is simply the next generation of this mindset, and it continues a long history of merging contemporary technology with Adidas’ much-loved aesthetic.
